In brief: Only LED strips specifically designed for sauna use are suitable for saunas. Valotehdas's DOTLESS SAUNA LED strip withstands up to 125 °C, is IP65-rated and provides even light without visible dots, making it ideal for behind backrests and along the ceiling edge. For under benches, the narrow, side-bendable SAUNA LED strip is particularly suitable (110 °C, IP67). Choose warm 2700 K light, install the strip in an aluminium profile and position the 24 V power supply outside the sauna or under the lower benches in a cool location. Never install LED strips above the heater.

What kind of LED strip can withstand sauna heat?
Temperature at the sauna ceiling edge often rises to 100–120 degrees Celsius. Standard LED strips cannot withstand this – they begin to deteriorate at around 80 °C. Saunas require strips specifically designed and tested for high heat and humidity.

| Best for | behind backrests, ceiling edge, brighter ambient light | under benches and curves, subdued light line |
Both are 24 V strips with ready-fitted 2-metre connection cables at both ends, and can be cut at 5 cm intervals. The dotless construction means the light appears as a continuous line even when viewed directly.
Where should LED lights be positioned in a sauna?
- Under benches: Light positioned under the front edge of the bench illuminates the lower benches and floor, increases safety and makes the bench appear to float. The narrow, side-bendable strip is easy to install here.
- Behind backrests: Light reflects up the wall and highlights the wood grain. This is the most effective way to create soft indirect lighting.
- Along the ceiling edge: A strip installed behind a trim slightly away from the ceiling provides even general lighting. For the ceiling edge, use a 125 °C-resistant strip, always in an aluminium profile.
- Not above the heater: Temperature above the heater rises too high for LED components. Fibre optic lights are better suited there, with the light source positioned outside the sauna.
Colour temperature and light output in saunas
Warm light is preferred in saunas. 2700 K is warm and inviting, and suits dark wood species such as alder and heat-treated aspen. With pale aspen, a more neutral shade can work more refreshingly. Dimming is almost essential in saunas, as little light is needed during bathing and much more during cleaning.
Power supplies, dimming and profiles
- Power supply: For one 5-metre strip (25 W), a 35 W 24 V IP67 LED power supply is suitable. Position the power supply outside the sauna, for example in a bathroom suspended ceiling, or under the lower benches where the temperature stays moderate. The power supply cannot withstand ceiling-edge heat, even if it's IP67-rated.
- Dimming: Choose a dimmable power supply and a TRIAC dimmer or wireless control (e.g. Zigbee or Casambi). A wireless controller saves on switch wiring, especially in renovation projects.
- Profiles: For the 11.3 mm strip, PINTA14 and SUORA14 are suitable. The 6 mm strip has its own aluminium profile and mounting clips. The profile protects the strip, conducts heat away and makes cleaning easier.
LED strip or fibre optic?
Fibre optics carry no electricity, so they withstand any temperature, but their installation requires many holes and light output is often limited. LED strips designed for saunas provide an even light line, are easier to install and can be dimmed. For most saunas, LED strips are now the better choice. Fibre optics are justified mainly above the heater or as a starry sky in the ceiling.
Installation tips
- Plan the wiring before panelling and use heat-resistant silicone cables. Seal connections with heat-shrink tubing.
- Always install the strip in an aluminium profile. A strip glued directly to wood overheats because wood insulates heat.
- Position the power supply in a cool location that remains accessible for future maintenance.
- Test the lights before benches and panels are permanently fixed.
- 230 V connections must be carried out by a qualified electrician.
Lights can also be added to an existing sauna without removing panels. See sauna lighting retrofit guide. If the sauna is adjacent to a bathroom, also read about bathroom IP zones. Completed sauna projects can be found in the idea gallery.
Frequently asked questions
What kind of LED strip can withstand sauna heat?
Saunas require LED strips specifically designed for sauna use. Valotehdas's DOTLESS SAUNA LED strip withstands up to 125 °C and is IP65-rated, whilst the side-bendable model withstands 110 °C and is IP67-rated. Standard LED strips cannot withstand sauna temperatures.
What LED lighting is recommended for saunas or bathrooms?
For saunas, indirect, warm (2700 K) and dimmable lighting under benches and behind backrests using sauna-specific LED strips is recommended. For bathrooms, luminaires with at least IP44 rating are suitable, and IP65-rated LED strips near the shower. In both cases, the power supply should be positioned in a dry, cool location.
Can LED strips be installed on a sauna ceiling?
Yes, when using sauna strips rated for at least 125 °C in an aluminium profile, installed along the ceiling edge behind trim – not above the heater.
Where should the LED strip power supply be positioned in a sauna?
Outside the sauna, for example in a bathroom suspended ceiling, or under the lower benches in the coolest spot. Never along the ceiling edge.
Can sauna LED lights be dimmed?
Yes. Choose a dimmable 24 V power supply and a TRIAC dimmer or wireless controller.
