How to Choose a Pendant Light: Size, Height and Placement

A pendant light can become the focal point of a room, but the wrong size or height can make the space feel uncomfortable. A few simple measurements help you choose a pendant that looks balanced and provides the right amount of light.

Choose the size for the room

The pendant should be in proportion to the room and the furniture below it. Above a dining table, the combined width of multiple pendants should not overwhelm the table. In a large room, a larger shade or a group of smaller lights often works better than one tiny fixture.

Set the right height

Above a dining table or kitchen island, leave approximately 60–75 cm between the tabletop and the lowest point of the light as a starting point. Adjust the height to suit the room, sightlines and the people using it.

Consider the light distribution

Use a downward-directed shade for focused task lighting. A translucent or open shade spreads light more widely and can create a softer atmosphere. Check the lumen output and beam direction instead of choosing by appearance alone.

Plan the placement

Centre the pendant over the table, island or seating area. When using several pendants, keep the spacing even and make sure doors, windows and sightlines remain clear.

Do not forget dimming

A dimmable pendant makes the room more flexible. Check that the light source, driver and wall dimmer are compatible, and choose a colour temperature that suits the room—warm white is usually comfortable for living and dining areas.
