GU10, E27, E14, G4 or G9? Light Bulb Bases Explained

The bulb base determines whether a lamp and a light source are compatible. GU10, E27, E14, G4 and G9 are among the most common base types, but they are designed for different fixtures and voltages.

GU10

GU10 is a two-pin twist-lock base commonly used in spotlights and recessed downlights. Many GU10 LED bulbs operate directly from the mains, but always check the product specifications.

E27

E27 is the larger screw base used in many pendant lights, table lamps and floor lamps. It is a versatile choice when you want to replace a traditional bulb with an LED version.

E14

E14 is the smaller screw base, often found in decorative lamps, wall lights and compact fixtures. Candle-shaped and globe-shaped LED bulbs are common E14 options.

G4

G4 is a small two-pin base typically used in compact decorative fixtures. Many G4 lamps use low voltage, so check whether a transformer is required before choosing a replacement.

G9

G9 uses two looped pins and is common in decorative pendants and wall lights. Both mains-voltage LED options and older halogen replacements exist.

Check these details before buying

Match the base, voltage, physical size, light output and colour temperature. If the fixture has a dimmer, choose a dimmable LED bulb that is compatible with the dimmer. Never force a bulb into a fitting with a different base type.
