Choosing between 12V and 24V LED strips affects voltage drop, cable sizing, installation length and the power supply you need. Both systems are useful, but the best choice depends on the application.
Why voltage drop matters
As current travels through the copper conductors in an LED strip, electrical resistance causes a gradual voltage drop. The beginning of a long strip may appear bright while the far end becomes dimmer or changes colour.
12V or 24V?
For the same wattage, a 24V system needs half the current of a 12V system. Lower current reduces voltage drop and cable heating, making 24V a strong choice for longer runs, kitchen worktops, ceiling coves and indirect lighting.
- 12V: shorter installations and situations where a smaller cutting interval is important.
- 24V: longer, more uniform runs with less voltage drop and simpler power distribution.
Choosing the power supply
Multiply the strip wattage per metre by the total length and add at least 20% reserve. Use an aluminium profile for heat dissipation and select a compatible dimmer or controller. Fixed electrical installations must follow applicable regulations.
